Reiki & Distance Reiki Explained

By Rajvinder Kaur

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a wonderful Complementary Therapy. It is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and deep relaxation, and promotes the bodies natural ability to heal. Reiki balances energy and removes energy blocks. Reiki is a gentle approach that treats body, emotion, mind and spirit. It is deeply relaxing and calming, and reduces stress, pain and tension. Reiki increases the flow of life force energy which speeds up healing and elevates mood.

Reiki was discovered by Mikao Usui in March 1922. The word Reiki comes from Japanese Kanji. Kanji are ideograms used in the written language of Japan and the word Reiki is represented by two kanji:

Rei – Spiritual Wisdom
Ki – Life Energy

Ki means the same as ‘Chi’ in Chinese and ‘Prana’ in Sanskrit, and in science, Ki is called ‘Biofield Energy’. This is the non-physical energy that animates from all living things. As long as something is alive, it has life energy circulating through it and surrounding it; when it dies, the life energy departs. If your life energy is low, or if there is a restriction in its flow, you will be more susceptible to illness. When it is high and flowing freely, you are less likely to get sick. Life energy plays a vital role in everything we do. Reiki is pure Life Force Energy.

Reiki is administered by ‘laying on hands’ and techniques such as Reiki have been practiced for thousands of years. Reiki can be hands on and hand off depending on the clients preference and the area being treated. Reiki is a very simple yet powerful technique that can be experienced by anyone who is open to the healing.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion and has no dogma, and does not conflict with religious beliefs.

Reiki is a complimentary therapy, therefore it is not a replacement for conventional medical treatment but can be used in conjunction with any modality. Not a very well-known fact is that the NHS (National Health Service in the UK) offers Reiki to patients in some areas.

Distance Reiki

I get a question regarding how Distance Reiki works every so often and it’s a great question! It is important to me that I give a comprehensive response because I know if someone were to have told me about Distance Reiki five or so years ago, I probably would have been a little sceptical. My experience has been that those who are unfamiliar with Distance Reiki will want to know if it ‘works’ through their smart phone. Some find it difficult to understand how a Reiki Session can be ‘received’ without being in a room together. I feel it’s important to mention here that Distance Reiki is not a new system that was ‘invented’ post pandemic to fit in with the pandemic regulations. Distance Reiki has been a equally respected, effective and provided by Reiki Masters for nearly 100 years. Distance Reiki ‘works’ in a couple of ways. An explanation I give is as follows; your home telephone, satellite TV and Wi-Fi all use energy frequencies we can’t see in order to work.  All of these must be ‘tuned to’ the correct frequency so that it will work, and they all have different ways to adjust the flow of energy so that we can turn them on/off. Also, and importantly, when we look back, all these things were thought quite unbelievable when first heard of them, right? Distant Reiki works in the exact same the same way. It is energy that must be ‘tuned’ to the person it is being sent to. Once it is ‘tuned in’ it will flow through the energy currents that exist naturally, in the same way that a phone or Wi-Fi signal does. Distance does not hinder the energy being sent, just as it is no issue for the internet or the phone. The energy that surrounds us carries all these energies to the recipient. With Reiki, the practitioner is the conduit of the energy.
Another example I use is that I believe that Distance Reiki works in a similar way to prayer. Have you ever prayed for someone or sent well wishes to someone who wasn’t in your presence? I have seen prayers work from long distances and I believe you may have too.

Angie Webster, in her article for Reiki Rays; Explaining Distance Reiki (13.11.2013), explained “It can be a difficult concept to understand that our thoughts, intentions and emotions are energy. Yet most people can feel that their emotions create an energy sensation in the body. They may also understand that the nerve endings and spinal cord help to carry these energies throughout the body. If you go one step further, you can see the relationship between our thoughts and our emotions. It’s not much of a leap from there to see that our thoughts and emotions have an effect on our perceptions and the people around us. These things truly change our environment! It is all energy.”
